OUR IDENTITY
Salem United Church of Christ is made up of believers who have come to Christ by a variety of routes. Some have grown up in this church, and some have moved into this community from elsewhere. Some have come disgruntled with former churches. Some are not sure why they are here. Nonetheless, we all stand together at the foot of the cross.
As Christians, we find ourselves at various stages in our journey with Christ. Some have developed a mature and lasting relationship with Him; some are still struggling to find the love of Christ; many are somewhere in between. On significant issues of theology and its application to life, we may not all agree. Such differences are not new in Christ's church. Martin Luther and our own denominational ancestors serve to confirm this observation. Great new denominations have arisen out of dissatisfaction and disagreement between believers. Even so, as the Apostle Paul reminds us, "the body is one though made of many different parts." Salem United Church of Christ is made up of all its members united in a common belief in the love and eternal promise of Christ.
This congregation, being a part of the universal body of Christ, accepts a great responsibility. We stand with arms wide open, welcoming all who believe. We encourage the open and friendly expression of different points of view. Our church is built on theological diversity. We believe there is a need to learn and attempt to understand the views of others. At the same time, we understand that on some issues we will not all agree. In these instances, individual members will and must develop personal beliefs in accordance with their own personal understanding of and relationship with Christ.
The mission of this church is not to force all its members into theological, social and political uniformity. Instead, we seek to encourage all our members to love Christ, their fellow believers, the whole of humankind, and themselves in a healthy and appropriate way. We believe that together, with God's help, we can be God's agent in bringing the healing touch of Jesus Christ to many who stand in need of help.
The circle around the cross is large and we are eager to see it grow as we welcome all who share a belief in Christ. Salem United Church of Christ will work to provide a church home for, and will try to meet the needs of all who walk with Christ. God's work is Salem's work. We have much to do. We invite all who share a similar vision to become partners with us as we seek to so serve Christ.
