What's Happening...
Men’s Fellowship
Monday, January 19, 7 PM
Salem’s Men’s Fellowship will gather at Chris Richards’ home at 7 PM on Monday, January 19. At these simple meetings we enjoy conversation, refreshments, a brief Bible study, and one another’s company. Please join us.
Cottage Meetings
. . . coming soon to a house near you!
The early church went from house to house (cf. Acts 2:46 mg), and, as it did, it spread the gospel, grew in strength of fellowship, and increased in number.
Salem plans to spend a portion of early 2009 going from house to house as well by way of a series of cottage meetings. A cottage meeting is a small group gathering in someone’s home. We hope to have several cottage meetings scattered throughout our parish sometime before the beginning of Lent.
Several people have signed up to host a cottage meeting in their home, and we are still looking for several more.
A cottage meeting will consist of a host, a convener, and likely no more than a dozen people. The responsibility of the host is to open their home to the group for a single meeting of approximately ninety minutes. The host will also provide some light refreshment, such as a dessert.
The convener will lead all those gathered in a specific conversation of about thirty minutes in length. This conversation will focus on some aspect of Salem’s life and ministry, with the expressed purpose of building excitement and energy around what the church is doing in this area or that.
The bulk of each cottage meeting will be devoted to the simple, important, and life-giving work of fellowship and the building of relationships.
We hope that you will attend one of these cottage meetings to be scheduled to occur sometime after the beginning of the year.
If you would like to host a cottage meeting in your home, please call the church office as soon as you can. Thanks!
We are looking forward to this way of living our life together. Perhaps we, too, as we go from house to house, will spread the gospel and grow in both depth and numbers, just as the early church in the days of Acts.
Bulletin Board
We have the idea for a simple, four-sided, free-standing bulletin board on casters. We even know where there is a model to look at. All that is needed is someone with the skills to put it together.
This useful contraption would be placed in the fellowship hall and be able to hold lots of information all while being moveable and not obtrusive.
Interested? See Mark or Sherrol. We will purchase the supplies.
Sunday Service Broadcasts
The technical issues that caused the poor quality of our Sunday service broadcasts have been resolved. For those unable to attend the service in person and for those who want to see it again, our Sunday morning services are broadcast on Thursday evening from 6:00 to 7:00 PM and on Sunday morning from 10:00 to 11:00. The broadcast was originally limited to Charter Cable subscribers in the City of Verona, but since Charter has moved Verona Channel 12 we can now be seen in Verona on channel 98 and in Madison, Middleton, Fitchburg, Mt Horeb, and Waunakee on channel 989. Rev. Dr. Mark E. Yurs
Happy New Year, everyone! Sometime during the course of 2009, "May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you may abound in hope by the power or the Holy Spirit" (Romans 15:13).
The new year brings with it new opportunities for our lives as Christians and for our life together as a church.
As we move into this new year of life and service, I can think of nothing better for us to do than to go fishing. Given that we are in the teeth of a Wisconsin winter, it may have to be ice fishing we think about just now, but I do want us to think about going fishing. It is the best thing we can do.
I am not thinking of actual fishing on a lake or river but of fishing as a metaphor. As I am using the term in this Mark-et Place, I want fishing to mean whatever it is we see we can do.
My thought springs from John 21:3. At some point after the resurrection of Jesus, and after Jesus had appeared to the disciples a time or two, the believers were together and Peter said to the others, "I am going fishing."
From one point of view, his determination to go fishing was remarkably odd. He and the others had just come face to face with the resurrection of Jesus, the most powerful and wonderful event heretofore known. Peter responds by doing the most ordinary and mundane thing he knows. One might think he could have chosen some activity higher, holier, more religious, more dramatic, more in keeping with the resurrection. He did not. He went fishing, and the others went with him.
While that is odd from one point of view, it is tremendously helpful from another. Contrary to what we might think, the disciples did not have their respective acts together. Sure, they experienced the resurrection in terms of direct visitations from Jesus, but there is nothing in any of the texts to lead us to suppose they knew exactly what all that meant, whether in terms of Jesus’s own being or in the way their lives were going to be henceforth. They did not know any more than we know.
So they went fishing. They did what they could. They did what they knew how to do. They did the best they had opportunity to do. Fishing may not have been everything, but it was practical and it was potentially a productive use of their time.
And Jesus met up with them as they went about doing this very thing. And he acted as if this indeed was the very thing they were supposed to be doing. He helped them with it and fed them afterwards.
Back to us. We are coming off Christmas. We are heading into a new year both as persons and as a church. What does God want us to do as people of Christ today? What do we do with the truth we have? How can we come away from Christmas, move into the new year, and build a snappy and successful life and church program? By fishing. By doing whatever it is we see we can do.
What is that exactly? You’ll have to figure that out for your own. It at least begins, though, I think, with worship, prayer, and some other simple tasks that may not seem to be immediate keys to the kingdom. Bringing food to the pantry, volunteering there or somewhere else in the community, hosting a cottage meeting, or going about your daily life with the idea that you are a Christian right there in the front of your thinking. You know, fishing, doing the next thing you can do. Christ will meet you along the way.

"10 minutes of prayer a day can alter your life".
-Henri NouwenFinding 10 minutes in our busy days to pray can certainly be a challenge – it can be hard to make time to focus on God. But I wonder how our lives would be different if we were to stay in closer touch with God in 2009?
It can be hard to know how to pray – what to say, or what to do. Here are some suggestions to try – if one doesn’t work, try another. There is no right or wrong way to talk with God.
-Some Ways To Pray-
pick a regular time each day to pray – early in the morning or before bed each night.
some people pray to music – make your own music, or listen to music without words or with Christian lyrics.
some people pray better when they are doing something – doodling, drawing, running, walking the dog. If your body needs to be active while you pray, do something that will allow your thoughts to focus on God, even as your body is moving.
use the Bible or a devotional book (ie. DEVOzine) to give you ideas of what to pray about.
if you don’t know what to pray about, just talk to God about that.
As you greet the New Year, think about making conversation with God a more regular part of your life. Get to know God, and let God get to know you.
And know that even as you pray, members of the YMT, your church family, and I will be in prayer for you. May this New Year be "life altering" in your relationship with God, and may it be full of peace, happiness, and new adventures!
Happy New Year!
-Laura
Youth News
Youth Calendar for 2009!
Hey, Everyone! There is a lot in store for us in the year ahead! The YMT has been as busy as Santa’s elves planning our spring calendar, and following up on some of the suggestions you have made for our youth gatherings and activities. We are still tweaking the schedule a little and with your continuing input we will be sending out a more detailed calendar in early January. Meanwhile, we hope the calendar in this newsletter will help you save some dates!
